The Judge's Verdict:
football 2019 Week 4

September 30, 2019
CASE SUMMARY:
The highlight of the week among running backs was Nick Chubb breaking off an 88-yard run, the longest play from scrimmage so far this year. Not only was Chubb virtually untouched, there was nobody – blockers or defenders – even in the picture once Chubb crossed the 50-yard line. This play locked down the win for the Browns and boosted Chubb to the #1 fantasy RB this week. But nullify this specific play, and Chubb still had 95 scrimmage yards + 2 TDs. Baltimore isn't a bad defense but its defensive stats are slightly deceiving because their first two opponents were Miami and Arizona, not the most dynamic of offenses. The other story of the week was Wayne Gallman, stepping in for injured Giants superstar Saquon Barkley. Everyone was keeping track of this game (something that hasn't said about the Giants in a while) to see how Gallman would fare, as well as whether QB "Danny Dimes" could repeat his spectacular debut performance. While Jones, unsurprisingly, regressed a bit from a statistical standpoint (the Giants won 24-3, Jones's performance was fine), Gallman played well, 63+1 on the ground and 55+1 on 6 catches. Unfortunately, most experts did not trust Gallman and kept him out of their RB2 lineups.
DEFENDANT TESTIMONY:
4for4
Ranked Chubb 11th and Gallman 22nd. The Judge considers a top 10 ranking to be a must-start RB1 and top 20 to be a RB2 recommendation.
The
Huddle
Placed Chubb 22nd, by far the lowest of all analysts. Weren't too positive on Gallman either, ranking him 25th. The Judge notes that TheHuddle also dropped Dalvin Cook all the way down to 18th, while most analysts had him in the top 6 or so. Cook was absolutely shut down all day until a late 4th quarter garbage time drive when he gained 31 of his 70 yards and his TD. As good as Cook has been this year, the Bears D successfully shut him down. The Judge likes bold predictions and TheHuddle's forecast was absolutely right, but Cook found an escape hatch when the game was out of reach and turned in a decent fantasy day.
TheFF
Advice
Placed Chubb 10th and Gallman 26th, right behind Gallman's opponent Chris Thompson, who carried the ball just 4 times.
Draft
Sharks
DraftSharks evaluations were not notable for these players: Nick Chubb was ranked 11th and Gallman 22nd.
CBS
The guys liked Chubb's opportunity, ranking him 7th, 8th and 5th (Cummings) this week. They also were more positive on Gallman than most, ranking him 18th, 22nd and 16th (Cummings again). Two of the guys placed Cook 4th, seemingly failing to acknowledge any negative impact caused by the Bears defense.
ESPN
The group ranking for Chubb was 8th, and notably, the only ESPN analyst placing Chubb outside the top 10 was Berry. The team placed Gallman 22nd, with individual rankings in a reasonbly tight window between 21 and 27.
Fantasy
Footballers
Didn't love Chubb, ranking him 12th. Were slightly positive on Gallman, listing him at #20
Fantasy
Sharks
Unfortunately the Sharks didn't like Chubb's story this week and dropped him to 22nd, much to the consternation of their followers. They placed Gallman 24th which probably didn't appease unhappy readers.
Fantasy
Sixpack
These guys were positive on Chubb, ranking him 8th but far less so on Gallman, ranking him 25th. The Sixpack actually compiled 5 independent raters, one of whom (Dennis Sosic) really did not like Gallman, placing him 42nd.
FFToday
Liked Chubb and placed him 7th, the highest ranking outside of CBS, while Gallman was 22nd, which was right around the overall consensus
Football
Diehards
Were mostly on the fence with Chubb, placing him 11th but not high on Gallman (28th)
Fulltime
Fantasy
A week like this is the reason the Fantasy Judge started his site. No other analyst placed Gallman anywhere near their Top 10. The highest site ranking was 18, while most analysts suggested benching Gallman for a WR flex. Here comes Fulltime who sees the opportunity and the matchup and goes all-in, ranking Gallman 9th (just one spot below Dalvin Cook). Lots of analysts claim to make bold predictions, here's one for real, and it paid off huge. Kudos. Fulltime actually placed Gallman ahead of Chubb, at 12th.
SleeperU
Smitty was bullish on Chubb, ranking him 7th, above almost all other experts. He was indifferent on Gallman, ranking him 22nd. The Judge would be negligent if he did not point out that SleeperU also ranked Austin Ekeler 22nd (he finished with 122+2) in favor of Melvin Gordon (ranked 13), who did not play (and was not expected to). He also had Cook 4th.

VERDICT ANALYSIS:
The Judge recognizes that ranking Nick Chubb 11th doesn't seem much different than say, 8th or 9th. But it indicates the analysts' attention to detail and tendency to recognize the opportunity for breakout performances, even if it isn't guaranteed or it comes from a player who isn't among the elite. We know Chubb is pretty good, nobody anticipated a 3 touchdown day from him, but some analysts recognized his matchup as a better-than-typical situation and upgraded Chubb on that basis. The Gallman scenario demonstrates some of the underside of the industry, that a lot of analysts are themselves relying on others to evaluate players and shape opinions. Gallman was an unknown factor, injected into a scenario due to injury to a star. The Giants were already divisive, given Daniel Jones debut just the week before. If anything, opinions should have been widely varied on Gallman's potential, from "he's in a great spot" (terrible Wash D, no RB-by-committee, gameplan for rookie QB focused on the run) to "this guy sucks" (3.5 YPC avg last year, gameplan would be built around Jones' arm). Instead, except for a few positive outliers, almost every analyst ranked Gallman right around 22, five of which placed him there *exactly*. This isn't a coincidence, this is looking at other expert rankings, then taking the safe route and matching those predictions (maybe moving up or down 2 spots). It is much safer to place an X-Factor like Gallman 22nd, same as ESPN, than it is to immediately place him in your Top 10 and possibly look ridiculous. But the guys at Fulltime Fantasy did exactly that, and their readers were heavily rewarded, while readers of most other sites watched Gallman rack up points sitting on their bench. A final point about Dalvin Cook: the Judge himself benched Adam Thielen the week after a 2-TD game. The Bears defense is simply that good right now, that every opponent should be an automatic downgrade. This isn't rocket science. It also won't go on indefinitely, but presently Chicago is the best defense. The Judge understands dropping Cook out of the top 10 would have been quite risky, and Cook did salvage a late TD, but this was very close to being a totally predictable, sub-5 point output while many experts had Cook ranked as high as 4th.
